Caitlyn Kiramman: Lore and Character Deep Dive

Caitlyn Kiramman is a scion of the Kiramman Clan, one of the ruling houses of Piltover. Eager to see the world for herself, Caitlyn joined the Enforcers as a young woman to make a name for herself. Caitlyn grew to become a very skilled marksman. Once, she joined a competition in Piltover and won the trophy. She confronted her closest opponent in the competition, the Piltover Police Department Sheriff Grayson, about throwing the competition for her, suspecting that her parents had paid her to do it. She also became very close to Jayce Talis, an Academy student that her parents were sponsoring. Caitlyn was with him when his laboratory exploded after a break-in, angering her father about the risk Jayce had apparently put her in. Although Caitlyn and her mother were in agreement to speak in defense of Jayce during his trial, it ultimately still went against his favor, much to Caitlyn's disappointment. After Jayce's expulsion from the Piltover Academy (due to him revealing to the Council of his desires to create magic), the Kirammans who sponsored him shunned him since he became a social embarrassment. Caitlyn's parents forbade Caitlyn of any further interactions with Jayce. This lasted until his successful Hextech experiment, which proved Hextech a viable and revolutionary practice. Caitlyn eventually joined the Piltover Police Department and became an enforcer. Through the cases she encountered and her investigations, Caitlyn came to the theory that someone was secretly at the center of all the violence the undercity was involved in.

Caitlyn's Appearance and Attire

Caitlyn Kiramman is a tall, athletic, young Piltovan woman, in her early twenties. She has pale skin, blue eyes, and a slender but toned figure. Caitlyn has shoulder-length dark navy blue hair, that is tied up into a ponytail when in Zaun, and neatly brushed and out when in her enforcer uniform. Throughout the series, Caitlyn is depicted wearing a navy-blue and gold enforcer's uniform trimmed with leather accessories, sometimes complemented by a matching brimless tall navy blue hat. Her nightwear consists of a mid-thigh-length pale lavender silk nightie with thin straps, knee-length brown shorts and ankle-length white socks with navy-blue accents at the heel. When in Zaun with Vi, Caitlyn wore a leather-accented Zaunite street outfit that Vi had stolen for her shortly after they arrived in The Lanes. As a teenager, Caitlyn was slimmer and paler, and often wore her hair out and neatly brushed. She wore upper-class Piltovan attire with navy, white, and gold accents. During the flashback in episode 5, Caitlyn was depicted wearing an earth-toned outfit, for the shooting competition in which she participated with the former (now deceased) Sheriff of Enforcers, Grayson.

Personality and Motivations

Caitlyn at first glance looks naive and sheltered-likely due to her being raised in a wealthy, influential family. She's very determined, and stubborn in the pursuit of her goals. When she is prevented from doing necessary police work that can stop Silco's evil activities, she despises it. For example, Caitlyn was upset with her mother because she used her power and influence to limit her work to unexciting, safe guard duty rather than letting her do meaningful police work. Right after Jinx's attack, Caitlyn was resolute in her responsibility to stop Silco's crimes, and continues investigating even though she was no longer an Enforcer. After the attack to the Council by Jinx, which ended up in her own mother's death, she feels extremely guilty for not being able to stop Jinx when she got the chance. While she initially wanted to find a solution that wouldn't require weaponizing Hextech, she later agrees on creating weapons with that technology. She's deeply invested in finding Jinx to make her pay for the death of her mother, to the point of resorting to methods such as using the Grey to clear the streets of Zaun to target the Chembarons, dismantle shimmer, and find Jinx. It may have provided the strike team an alternative means to handling these objectives than the war Salo and Ambessa were trying to push the remaining council into. She's so blinded by her personal vendetta that she becomes increasingly more erratic. She goes as far as telling Vi that she is no different from her sister and blames her for stopping her. She later steps up to take the mantle of Commander as Ambessa, in her own quest for Hextech weaponry, led a gathering in the council room after working her manipulation magic behind the scenes to declare Martial Law and appoint Caitlyn as the face.

Skills and Abilities

  • Deduction Skills: Caitlyn is incredibly observant, noticing the tiniest details that most would not pay attention to.
  • Rifle Proficiency: Like her parents, Caitlyn is skilled with a rifle.

Key Relationships

Cassandra Kiramman (Mother)

Cassandra Kiramman expects Caitlyn to be an example worthy of the Kiramman name. Cassandra would use her influence as Councilor to make sure Caitlyn was posted in unexciting, safe guard duty. Furthermore, when Caitlyn almost died in an explosion caused by Jinx, Cassandra used her influence to get her fired from her job. Caitlyn is vexed by her mother preventing her from seeing the real world and would actively avoid her because of it. Cassandra in turn disapproves of Caitlyn being a misfit that breaks laws to do work. Even so, Cassandra cares about her daughter and approves of her service to people. When Caitlyn asked her to let her present evidence of Silco's conspiracy to the Piltover Council, Cassandra obliged.

Tobias Kiramman (Father)

As Caitlyn's father, Tobias Kiramman is very supportive of his daughter and would defend her actions, even when his wife doesn't approve. He cares very much about Caitlyn's well-being and is there to use his medical expertise to heal her when she gets hurt on the job.

Sheriff Grayson

When Caitlyn was young, Caitlyn competed against Sheriff Grayson in a shooting competition once. Caitlyn won the competition but was unsatisfied with her win because she thought her parents paid Grayson to let her win. Grayson revealed that she let Caitlyn win the competition, not because her parents paid her to, but simply because she felt Caitlyn deserved it.

Jayce Talis

Jayce and Caitlyn have a close friendship. Since her parents were Jayce's sponsors who financially supported him in his researches at the academy, Caitlyn knows him since she was a child and usually helped him with his studio and materials. After the explosion caused by Powder destroyed his studio and revealed his unsanctioned experiments, Jayce was expelled and the Kirammans cut off their support for him. Caitlyn was an advocate of Jayce but her opinion mattered little unless it aligned with those of her parents. The Kirammans turned their backs on Jayce and forbade Caitlyn from seeing him, which caused Cait and Jayce to see each other less than before. As Caitlyn grew up, her friendship with Jayce remained intact over the years and he is one of the few people that she can talk to about her investigations. At the Progress Day, Jayce approaches Caitlyn and jokes about her new job as an Enforcer and her annoyance at her parents' meddling with her career. After Caitlyn got herself caught in an explosion caused by Jinx that nearly kills her, Jayce attempts to help her by offering her a job working for him, but she rejects it.

Vi

Vi and Caitlyn share a deep relationship. Being responsible for freeing Vi from prison, Vi would directly be responsible for changing Caitlyn's viewpoint of Zaun, showing her the reality of the living conditions in the undercity. Caitlyn's kindness and concern over her would lead Vi to giving Caitlyn the nickname of "Cupcake", which Caitlyn would eventually take to heart. Caitlyn would be the only person Vi would emotionally open up to, telling her about her past and current concerns. Caitlyn was one of the surviving Enforcers who survived Jinx's ambush during the Bicentennial Progress Day attack. Caitlyn resolved to tracking down Jinx in the hopes that she can recover the hextech gemstone she stole from Piltover and confirm her theory that her attacks are linked to Silco, the Undercity industrialist that has organized much of the crime and corruption plaguing Piltover and Zaun. To this end, she enlisted the help of Vi, but eventually she discovered that Vi is the older sister of Jinx, which puts her in an awkward position as she had grown close to Vi. Although she tries to lay the blame of their cities' ills on Silco, she becomes hesitant to reveal Jinx's crimes to the Piltover Council for the sake of Vi's feelings. Despite this, Vi eased her burdens by acknowledging that Jinx was responsible for the Piltover attacks herself. Eventually Caitlyn, Vi, and Silco were kidnapped by Jinx who sought to use their relationship as sisters to entice Vi to kill Caitlyn. Vi refused, and Caitlyn was able to escape her restraints and hold Jinx at gunpoint. Although Caitlyn believed that Jinx was too far gone to be saved, Caitlyn hesitated to kill Jinx because Vi pleaded with Caitlyn to spare her life.

Ekko and the Firelights

Caitlyn and Vi were kidnapped by the Firelights during a battle with Jinx and were taken to their hideout. Caitlyn assumed that the Firelights worked for Silco and were going to hurt Vi during her interrogation. Caitlyn was shocked to learn however, that Vi and the Firelights' leader, Ekko, were childhood friends and so Ekko chose to trust Caitlyn for the moment because Vi vouched for her. As a gesture of goodwill, Ekko offers to escort Caitlyn to Piltover. Caitlyn then recognized the Firelights as good people and admires what they were able to accomplish in Zaun. Ekko accuses the Piltovans of trying to destroy the Firelights and their home but Caitlyn argues that it is a misunderstanding, and that Piltover was led to believe that the Firelights worked for Silco. Ekko takes offense to Caitlyn's remarks as he believes it is a coverup, since the Piltover Enforcers are paid by Silco to hunt and kill many of his Firelight friends. Vi defuses the situation by defending Caitlyn and telling Ekko that Caitlyn isn't his enemy. When Ekko demanded to know the relevance of the hextech gemstone to the Piltovans, Caitlyn explains that the gemstone was stolen by Jinx and could be weaponized by a Zaunite malefactor, which she believes is the reason why the Enforcers are being more aggressive in Zaun. Ekko considers keeping the gemstone and weaponizing it against Silco; Caitlyn sympathizes with Ekko's plight but persuades him that the cycle of violence will never stop unless they bring the gemstone to Piltover and reveal Silco as the true cause of the chaos and corruption. Ekko acquiesces to giving the gemstone back to the Piltover Council but demands that he delivers it to them personally. Caitlyn hopes that by shutting down Silco's criminal enterprise, the Firelights won't need to hide anymore, and Piltover and Zaun can begin to heal. However, on their way to Piltover, they are intercepted by Sheriff Marcus and a group of Enforcers, who try to kill both Ekko and Caitlyn. Jinx intervened and tries to kill everyone with bombs.

Maddie

Maddie is a fellow enforcer who joined Caitlyn's strike team to hunt down Jinx. After Caitlyn's appointed as the Commander of Piltover, and her break-up with Vi, they become lovers. Maddie is seen comforting Caitlyn and giving her reassurance on her methods as the new leader of the city and cares for her.
