Springtrap's Skins in Dead by Daylight

Deep within the abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, William Afton ran from the ghosts of his victims. But fate had different plans for Afton. Something activated the springlocks within the Spring Bonnie costume. Metal clamped against metal, piercing the murderer and trapping him in his costume. He awoke to a familiar sound, his body a pillar of agony. The ghosts that had tormented him were gone. The walls surrounding him were decomposing, the floor beneath him failing away in mouldy patches. How much time had transpired since the springlocks tore through his body and fixed him within his costume? The sound filled his ears again: Children's laughter. Were children playing in the kitchen? He picked up speed as he moved. Walking turned to running. No children, no games, no laughter. Springtrap examined the fog. Curiosity tightened his grip on him. Who were they? It didn't matter. They were his victims now.

Death was not the end for William Afton. Celebrate! Death could not stop him. Engorged cysts emerged from the suit. The sight of a jacket and pants caught him by surprise. The blade was something to behold. A mascot from the machine. Any semblance of morality was long gone. The rabbit's head glowed from within.

Springtrap's Arrival in Dead by Daylight

Developer Behaviour Interactive revealed more details about the highly anticipated chapter during the Dead by Daylight Ninth Anniversary Celebration panel at PAX East in Boston. Both franchises have found enormous success in the horror genre over the last decade. Five Nights at Freddy’s terrified a whole generation of gamers with its ghastly stories and animatronic villains, launching a multimedia empire that now spans books and movies. And people are still hooked on DBD’s intense survivors vs. killers gameplay.

Behaviour invites other worlds and characters to its universe for all sorts of reasons, sometimes stretching the definition of what horror can be. “In the case of Five Nights at Freddy's, it's not just because it's a movie or a video game or this or that-it is such an integral part of horror culture nowadays,” said Mathieu Côté, Head of Partnerships at Behaviour. The studio is still keeping some details of the new chapter-including its release date, the new killer’s abilities, and the specific features of the map-a closely guarded secret.

“In this case, it was also sitting down with [Scott] and going, 'What do you think our fans will want? And what do you think your fans will want? Let's make sure that we give them something that they all agree is the thing,’” said Côté. “So Springtrap was a no-brainer. There were other options, but he's the darkest.”

This chapter will also mark the first time Springtrap will be playable in any form. In the FNAF games, you’re usually trying to evade or run away from him. “We did our best to be as authentic to the character as possible for both his powers and his perks,” said Guzzo. “I did a lot of research. I watched dozens, literally dozens of hours, of the king of FNAF himself, Markiplier, playing through all the games.”

“Springtrap is this big, clonking, menacing force of nature. He's somehow a sneaky jump scare guy, but also he's kind of [stomping] around through the halls of this empty place, and it works,” said Guzzo. “That's the stuff I try to look at. I'm what you call a top-down designer.” Since the history of Five Nights at Freddy’s is so closely tied with YouTube creators like Markiplier and many others, he also paid attention to the way people reacted to Springtrap in Let’s Play videos. In one of Guzzo’s notes he wrote down “noises and vents,” referring to the way people he saw playing FNAF were always freaked out about hearing noises coming from the vents.

“At the end of the day, I'm here to scare people-that's my job. I'm here to make sure that the game is fun and that people are on their toes, and make sure people are having those great little jump scare moments.”

The Animatronic's Lore and In-Game Features

Dead by Daylight: Five Nights at Freddy’s brings Springtrap - once known as William Afton -- into The Fog as The Animatronic. The Entity's grand design requires Killers, trapped in a perpetual cycle of endless violence, eliciting no shortage of horror, terror, and panic from Survivors. It’s no wonder that Afton found himself in The Entity’s sights. The night The Fog came calling, Springtrap was alone in an abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, when his thoughts were interrupted by the sound of laughter - a sound that never failed to fuel his bloodlust. Despite being gruesomely trapped in an animatronic suit, Springtrap remains driven by the darkest aspects of his humanity. While he previously operated under the shroud of secrecy, his arrival into The Fog has given him the freedom to pursue new victims - axe in hand - to his heart’s content.

Scattered throughout the Map are Security Doors, which can be accessed by Killer and Survivor alike. While playing as Springtrap, entering a Security Door will allow you to instantly exit any other Door - even those occupied by Survivors. On the Survivor side, entering a Security Room will allow you to cycle through any Security Camera across the Map, granting unprecedented mobility - albeit not without significant risk.

Help Wanted allows you to Compromise a Generator, temporarily shortening your Basic Attack Cooldowns the moment that Generator is fully repaired. Phantom Fear is a testament to the power of Springtrap’s grotesque, fear-inducing appearance. Haywire significantly elevates the Endgame stakes, forcing Survivors to make tough decisions in a crucial moment. The moment the Exit Gates are fully powered, their progress will steadily decline whenever a Survivor is forced to leave.

“Five nights? Try forever. Step into an endless cycle of pain and torment as Springtrap, and enjoy a Power that’s certain to thrill Five Nights At Freddy’s fans and newcomers alike.” While Springtrap has several deadly tools at his disposal, coordinated Survivors can effectively use the Security Room system to their advantage, gaining access to unprecedented mobility. Given the risk of entering a Security Room, Survivors might wait until a teammate is in a chase. If that chase does not end quickly, they’ll have plenty of breathing room to look around the Map and plan their next move. It’s important to weigh the benefits of committing to a chase, especially if you suspect a Survivor is in a Security Room.

Springtrap's Weaponry and Voice Lines

"Excellent. The Pizza Knife is the Primary Weapon of The Animatronic."

The choice for a Fire Axe in Dead By Daylight might be informed design, since the character is associated with burning buildings. The Fire Axe could also be a direct reference to fan content, with William Afton wielding a Fire Axe in The Living Tombstone's Five Nights at Freddy's 3 music video titled "Die in a fire," in which he uses it to dismember the main 4 animatronics in the series. This animation is a more plausible rendition of the Five Nights at Freddy's 3 minigame where William Afton dismembers them by hand.

PJ Heywood, Afton’s voice actor, had originally based Afton’s voice upon Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. William uses fake names to not expose himself in public. The Fire Axe of his Power may be a reference to an extremely famous music video based on Five Nights at Freddy's 3, created by The Living Tombstone. This would inspire fans to create concepts for both William and Springtrap wielding a fire hatchet or axe. Eventually, these concepts would extend to Dead by Daylight, culminating in the DBD Community Concept Team's animation of a full Five Nights at Freddy's Chapter for the game.

Most of The Animatronic's voice lines are references to his quotes in the games Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery and Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator.

  • "The darkest pit of hell is open for business" is a reference to a line delivered by Henry Emily in one of the endings of Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator.
  • "Play with fire and you'll get burned" is taken and altered from Rockstar Foxy in Ultimate Custom Night.
  • "Lets pull you apart" is taken and slightly altered from Nightmare Fredbear in Ultimate Custom Night.
  • "You. Will. Fear."
  • "I know!"
  • "You will not be spared."
  • "I will make you suffer!"
  • "It’s real. It is real."
  • "Fear and death."
  • "Got you now!"
  • "Grrah!"
  • "Nghharh!"
  • "What's the matter?"
  • "Tick-Tock. Tick-Tock."
  • "I'm faster..."

The Animatronic features two unique Lobby Animations when selecting him, featuring him walking across the screen or peering out from the right side before exiting. While in the Lobby, The Animatronic may convulse and grab his head screaming before returning to his normal idle stance. Entering Supply Closet will cause an Endoskeleton to pop out of a vent in the ceiling. When sitting in the lobby looking at the Survivors, The Animatronic may turn slightly and look at the screen.

Springtrap's Cosmetic Skins

Springtrap/Skins does not assist in gameplay and is solely for cosmetic purposes. This page is dedicated to only add Skins for Springtrap. Springtrap has 22 skins.

Legendary Skins

Yellow Rabbit

Yellow Rabbit is one of the only skins to also appear in Dead by Daylight. Noticeably, however, DbD's counterpart lacks a mask, instead using Matthew Lillard (the actor who plays Afton in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie series)'s head.

Springtrap now takes the appearance of a stereotypical clown. The mascot head he wears is white, with purple fuzz resembling thinning hair. He has red and blue heterochromatic eyes, and the area around his mouth is red, embodying lipstick. He wears a fat clown costume overtop his mascot suit which consists of a red shirt with three red pom-poms, along with black sleeves and pants. He wears large, red clown shoes, and carries around a massive mallot in place of his normal axe.

Clown is the one of the only skins to also appear in Dead by Daylight. Noticeably, however, DbD's counterpart is slimmer to his original model, the corpse inside is pale, in contrast with Afton's purple-ish skin tone.

Epic Skins

Bloody Skin

Springtrap now has a completely destroyed appearance, his eyes glow purple with missing parts revealing the endoskeleton underneath, he now wields a crowbar instead of the standard axe.

Toxic Skin

Springtrap now has a completely destroyed animatronic body, his eyes glow red with some parts missing, his innards are that of a crimson-red color, he now wields a sledgehammer instead of the standard axe.

Grinch Skin

Springtrap is now a more saturated green, and now has fur and eyebrows. He also now wears a white fur trimmed red jacket along a broad buckled belt. This skin references The Grinch, a popular children's Christmas story by Dr. Seuss.

Cubic Springtrap

Springtrap now takes a completely yellow and cubic form. This is a direct reference to William Afton wearing Spring Bonnie's suit in the Five Nights at Freddy's 3 minigames.

Salvage

Springtrap entirely changes character, becoming Salvage, the main antagonist of the Dogwatching game trilogy. Salvage is a heavily withered dark purple bear wearing a blue top hat and bowtie. His left eye is missing, the empty eye-socket being littered with sharp teeth and stained with a mysterious black substance. His right eye is also submerged in the same mysterious substance, which appears to be spilling from his eye-socket. His jaw hangs open, full of yellowed bear teeth. His body is covered with splatters and strings or tendrils of the same black substance, as well as large gashes filled with the same sharp teeth. His costume's right hand, right foot and left leg are missing, exposing a humanoid structure made of the same black substance, with sharp spines across its surface. His axe is also made of the same substance.

Twilight

Ditto, but unwithered.

Bronze Springtrap

Springtrap now has a bronze color on his body and axe.

Silver Springtrap

Springtrap becomes silver along with his axe.

Flaming Springtrap

Springtrap now becomes gold and has a trail of fire that follows him. His axe also becomes the same gold color. He now has yellow eyes. Furthermore, his feet, which are typically that of an endoskeleton's now become stubs of golden bones, which are most notably sharpened. This is rewarded when the player reaches Gold in the levels tab with Springtrap. This skin could be a reference to how Fazbear's Freight burned to the ground in Five Nights at Freddy's 3, or the now-defunct Five Nights at Freddy's: Special Delivery (also known as Fnaf AR) skin Flaming Springtrap, which came from the Sizzling Summer event from the summer of 2020, where he retains the same look, just gold now.

Diamond Springtrap

Springtrap now becomes cyan on his torso, arms, and head. His crotch and thighs become a dull blue, and his calves and knees become purple. His Endoskeleton becomes black and the gore entangled on it becomes magenta. His stomach is completely removed exposing his chest cavity, where a purple soul resides (a reference to the Purple Guy's soul residing in the animatronic). His head becomes severely more damaged than usual, with a loose hanging jaw and a large chunk of the muzzle missing. His eyes have a white sclera, black iris, and glowing cyan pupil. Lastly his axe becomes a dark cyan color entirely, adorned with an earless and toothless Freddy Fazbear head open on the axe's head. This is rewarded when the player reaches Diamond in the levels tab with Springtrap.

Scrapped and Planned Skins

Cyborg Sammy Lawrence

Springtrap would've turned into a cyborg-ish take on Sammy Lawrence from Bendy and The Ink Machine. This skin was planned to release alongside a few other scrapped skins that would've been added when Inkfell was released. This skin is confirmed to be getting reused for Shadowborne when he comes out as a reference to the "Hello Bendy" BATIM and HN collab.

Pumpkin Rabbit

I had an idea for a visceral skin but probs not gonna happen since someone else created it for their analog horror, i was thinking the pumpkin rabbit with unique dialogue, mori, animations, ect… for jumpscare mechanic have the mask fall off or keep it as springtrap’s jumpscare with the teeth showing the actual face underneath, for mori have it be the pumpkin rabbit come towards the survivor turn them over then have the pumpkin rabbit tear into the face while laughing like a maniac and the survivor screaming in agony then silence, the pumpkin rabbit gets up and then mori finishes, for weapon have him use a pumpkin carving knife like those long metal ones that have a lot of teeth, the axe can stay the same if not have it be (sounds stupid but could relate to his butcher's apron) an oversized throwable meat cleaver.

Other Potential Skins and References

So the much anticipated FNAF update is here and we have our killer Springtrap aka William Afton. Great choice I was thinking was either gonna be Freddy or Springtrap. Being that this is FNAF though we shouldn't forget about some of the other animatronic characters so why not have them included as skins for The Animatronic? In the lore the Fredbear or Golden Freddy character is supposed to be the other springlock suit. (Those things were freaky honestly) for his mori will be a bit of a horror show for some, he fill pick up the survivor in both his hands and the Freddles will crawl along his arms onto the survivor and latch on then start biting at their neck and chest then he drops them to the ground and as they struggle to get the Freddles off he punches his claws into their chest killing them. (The nightmare animatronics from FNAF 4 are honestly perfect for DBD so gonna be seeing mainly here)So just like Fredbear and Nightmare Freddy, Chica will use her claws to attack instead of a knife and for her ranged attack will throw her Cupcake instead of a fire axe. So obviously his melee weapon will be his hook, and given the hook is on his right hand he may be required to have a unique animation where the axe will appear in his left hand. Given he is a pirate character his axe will resemble a boarding axe which was a type of axe weapon used by sailors and pirates back in the age of sail during naval battles. His mori will be somewhat brutal as he will slash his hook through a survivor's jaw and bring them close to his face before biting them in the head, another reference to the Bite of 87.

Springtrap's entire suit becomes black with his endoskeleton becoming multiple neon colors.

Springtrap is now a neon green with antennas at the top of his head and removes the teeth off of both the mask and corpse, this also makes the axe head green. This is a reference to those silly cat images edited to look like aliens.

Springtrap's body becomes glasslike and cracked in some areas. His eyes turn red and he holds an arrow with wings on it.

Springtrap now is completely yellow-ish, still with some holes onto the animatronic, having a more realistic fire axe and texture, and wears a purple chest bowtie.
