Introduction to Microneedle Patch Technology
Technological advancements have allowed acne-busting actives to be incorporated into dissolving microneedles. These tiny needles can painlessly penetrate the skin barrier, where they create a micro-wound that stimulates wound healing.

Inspired by in-clinic microneedling treatments, at-home microneedling patches are designed to deliver skin-boosting ingredients deeper into the skin. While the premise behind microneedle patches sounds very enticing, do they actually work?
How Microneedle Patches Work
Microneedle patches are designed with fine needles containing active ingredients. "Dissolving microneedles are deep enough to get past the stratum corneum into the skin itself but too shallow to reach the nerves and cause pain."
When prepared correctly, hyaluronic acid can be fashioned into needles that hold active ingredients in their tips. These microneedles need to be long enough to deliver ingredients past the protective barrier of the skin (stratum corneum) and reach into the epidermis directly. However, they should not be too long that they reach the pain nerves in the skin, which is anything longer than 0.5mm. This means a needle length of between 0.2mm (to ensure you get through the epidermis) and 0.4mm (to ensure you don't hit pain fibres) is ideal.

The Science Behind Acne Scar Improvement
Microneedles can help with acne scars. Studies have shown that the needles traumatizing the skin trigger cascades of growth factors that ultimately lead to collagen production to help fill in the scars. "The purpose is twofold - to actually traumatize your skin because when it starts to heal it stimulates a cascade of growth factors that stimulate production of new skin cells along with collagen and elastin to rejuvenate the skin," explained Dr. Ginni Mansberg, one of E.S.K’s founders.
Key Benefits and Actives in ESK Spotless Patches
Depending on the ingredients included, microneedle patches can offer a variety of benefits from anti-ageing to blemish control. Each patch contains dissolving hyaluronic acid microneedles that create a targeted pathway for ingredients such as salicylic acid, niacinamide, and botanical extracts to reach the upper layers of the skin. With the right ingredients in the microneedle tips, the microneedles can help combat bad actor bacteria.
ESK Complexion Correction Patches
The Complexion Correction patches utilize hyaluronic acid, 4-N-butylresorcinol (a powerful tyrosinase inhibitor), retinal, and niacinamide to target signs of hyperpigmentation.

How to Use ESK Spotless Microneedle Patches
To use the patches, first wash and dry your hands. Cleanse your skin and thoroughly pat dry. Take the patch out of the plastic case and then peel off the plastic backing. Be careful not to touch the microneedles! Place the patch on the irritated area or blemish. You may feel a slight prickling feeling, but it won’t sting or hurt. Leave on skin for 8 hours for stunning results.
Please note: ESK Spotless Patches are best used during the early onset of a pimple. They are not as effective for large cystic or blind painful pimples.
