WAKOL Moisture Barrier Systems: Comprehensive Information

WAKOL offers advanced moisture barrier solutions designed to protect subfloors and ensure the longevity of various flooring installations. These products are crucial for managing moisture in concrete slabs, especially in new constructions or when dealing with residual moisture.

WAKOL PU 280 Moisture Barrier

WAKOL PU 280 Moisture Barrier is a one-component waterproof primer. It serves a dual purpose: priming both porous/absorbent and non-porous subfloors, and rigidifying soft subfloor surfaces. This premium moisture barrier is specifically formulated for "green" concrete slabs and concrete with residual moisture, making it ideal before installing flooring and approved Wakol patch/leveling compounds.

Key Applications for WAKOL PU 280:

  • Porous/absorbent subfloors
  • Non-porous/non-absorbent subfloors
  • Solidifying soft subfloor surfaces (including gypsum and lightweight concrete)
  • "Green" concrete slabs
  • Encapsulating non-water-soluble adhesive residue (including "cut-back")
  • Primer/moisture retarder on plywood substrates
  • Concrete with residual moisture prior to installation of flooring

Moisture Protection Levels for WAKOL PU 280:

WAKOL PU 280 offers two levels of moisture protection:

One Coat Application:

  • Blocks moisture in concrete slabs up to 12 lbs/1000 sq. ft./24 hours (ASTM F 1869 Calcium Chloride Test Method).
  • Blocks moisture up to 90% relative humidity (rH) (ASTM F 2170-02 In-Situ Test Method).

Two Coats Application:

  • Blocks moisture in concrete slabs up to 18 lbs/1000 sq. ft./24 hours (ASTM F 1869 Calcium Chloride Test Method).
  • Blocks moisture up to 98% relative humidity (rH) (ASTM F 2170-02 In-Situ Test Method).

Special Conditions and Requirements for WAKOL PU 280:

No Moisture Test Required Conditions:

A moisture test is not required when WAKOL PU 280 is applied in two coats, provided the following conditions are met:

  • The concrete must be surface dry.
  • The concrete must be at least 28 days old.
  • There must be an intact structural waterproofing membrane beneath the slab.

Radiant Heat Application (Two Coats):

When used over radiant heated floors, two coats of WAKOL PU 280 Moisture Barrier can block moisture up to:

  • 6 lbs/1000 sq. ft./24 hours (ASTM F 1869 Calcium Chloride Test Method).
  • 85% relative humidity (rH) (ASTM F 2170-02 In-Situ Test Method).

General Jobsite and Acclimation Guidelines:

Jobsite conditions must comply with ASTM, NWFA, or RFCI Guidelines. Doors and windows must be installed, and the HVAC system must be operational to simulate living environment climate conditions. The recommended working environment is 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C) with 40% to 65% relative humidity. Materials should be properly acclimated during cold periods.

Drying Process and Properties of WAKOL PU 280:

  • Drying Process: Fast drying, with flooring installation possible approximately 40-50 minutes after the last application. No waiting is required. The product is not affected by water once cured.
  • Odor and Stability: Exhibits a very slight, non-offensive odor. It is Zero VOCs. The shelf life is one year in an unopened container.
  • Necessary Tools and Materials: No mixing is required. The product is solvent-free and water-free. Clean-up with mineral spirits is recommended before the primer cures.

WAKOL MS 330

WAKOL MS 330 is a single-component moisture barrier and primer. It is designed for priming porous and non-porous subfloors and for solidifying soft subfloor surfaces. This product serves as a premium moisture barrier for "green" concrete slabs and concrete with residual moisture, prior to installing wood and cork flooring, as well as approved Wakol patch/leveling compounds.

Moisture Protection Levels for WAKOL MS 330:

WAKOL MS 330 provides significant moisture protection:

Under Wood Flooring:

  • One coat of WAKOL MS 330 will block moisture in concrete slabs up to 18 lbs/1000 sq. ft./24 hours (ASTM F 1869 Calcium Chloride Test Method).
  • It blocks moisture up to 100% relative humidity (rH) when used under wood flooring.

Under Resilient Floor Coverings:

  • One coat of WAKOL MS 330 will block moisture in concrete slabs up to 12 lbs/1000 sq. ft./24 hours (ASTM F 1869 Calcium Chloride Test Method).
  • It blocks moisture up to 95% relative humidity (rH) under resilient floor coverings.

Radiant Heated Floors:

WAKOL MS 330 can be used on radiant heated floors, blocking moisture up to 6 lbs/1000 sq. ft./24 hours (ASTM F 1869 Calcium Chloride Test Method).

Coverage and Properties of WAKOL MS 330:

  • Coverage: Approximately 400 sq. ft. per gallon as a primer.
  • Properties: Acts as a premium moisture barrier for "green" concrete slabs and concrete with residual moisture. It is also suitable for priming porous and non-porous subfloors and solidifying soft subfloor surfaces.
