The Dewy Serum: Benefits and Key Ingredients

Tatcha is expanding its popular Dewy line with the introduction of The Dewy Serum, a new skincare product designed to provide intense hydration and a radiant complexion. This serum joins other beloved products in the Dewy collection, including The Dewy Cream and The Dewy Skin Mist, all of which aim to achieve a "glassy" or "dolphin skin" effect.

Introducing The Dewy Serum

After three years of development, The Dewy Serum is set to launch, offering a concentrated dose of hydration to maintain the coveted dewy look. It is positioned as a key player in achieving a well-hydrated appearance, working "behind the scenes to maintain that enviable my-skin-is-so-hydrated-it-looks-wet look."

The Power of Hadasei-3 Complex

At the core of Tatcha's Dewy products is the proprietary Hadasei-3 complex. This potent blend features antioxidant-rich extracts from Japanese rice, algae, and green tea. These ingredients are double-fermented to maximize their benefits.

Key Ingredients and Their Benefits:

  • Rice: Rich in essential fatty acids, rice helps to moisturize the skin.
  • Algae: When fermented, algae can act as an anti-inflammatory agent due to its carbohydrate composition.
  • Green Tea: Known for its ability to reduce irritation, green tea contains polyphenols that act like "fire extinguishers," combating inflammation caused by environmental free-radical damage.

The fermentation process also causes these extracts to release lactic acid. This ingredient offers a dual-action benefit: it gently exfoliates the skin by sloughing away rough patches and dead skin cells, while simultaneously drawing moisture into the skin. This process is crucial for allowing hydration to penetrate effectively. As Rose Sparacio, Tatcha's vice president of product innovation, explains, "You can moisturize all you want, but you're really not doing anything because you have all of these dead skin cells hanging on, hogging up the room for all of these new, healthy cells below them."

Additional Hydrating and Protective Ingredients

In addition to the Hadasei-3 complex, The Dewy Serum is further enhanced by:

  • Plant-derived Hyaluronic Acid: This ingredient helps to plump the skin and attract moisture.
  • Squalane (from sugarcane): Similar to hyaluronic acid, squalane aids in plumping the skin and ensuring the skin's moisture barrier is in optimal condition.

These ingredients work together with the Hadasei-3 complex to fortify the skin's moisture barrier, which acts as a protective "security system." A healthy moisture barrier is essential for retaining moisture, preventing irritation, reducing the appearance of fine lines, and combating dehydration, ultimately keeping the skin dewy and smooth.

The serum also contains Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil, derived from a mustard-related plant. This oil is rich in fatty acids that help the skin lock in moisture. Tatcha specifically chose this oil for its lightweight, non-greasy feel, quick absorption, and ease of layering with other products. This makes it suitable even for acne-prone skin and allows for seamless integration into various skincare routines.

The Dewy Serum in Your Skincare Routine

The Dewy Serum is designed to be a versatile product that can prime the skin and bring it to its optimal functional level. It can be layered effectively with other skincare products, including vitamin C serums and moisturizers, without causing pilling.

Application and Layering Recommendations:

Daniel Martin, Tatcha's global director of artistry and education, suggests that The Dewy Serum acts as a "midway product" that can complement both lighter and richer creams. Depending on skin type, layering recommendations include:

  • For Dry Skin: The Essence, followed by The Dewy Serum, and then The Dewy Skin Cream.
  • For Combination or Oily Skin: The Essence, followed by The Dewy Serum, and then The Water Cream.

When incorporating other serums, such as vitamin C, it's recommended to layer them separately before applying The Dewy Serum. The serum acts as a "cocoon" to lock in moisture. Due to the presence of lactic acid, applying an SPF on top during the day is advised.

Dewy Serum and Makeup Application

Makeup artists highlight the serum's benefits for makeup application. Its light texture and moisturizing properties can help makeup adhere better to the skin, providing a naturally radiant finish. Daniel Martin notes that it can be mixed with foundation to sheer out coverage and create a more "life-like finish." He has successfully blended it with full-coverage foundations, like the Nars Soft Matte foundation, to achieve this effect.

Availability and Pricing

The Dewy Serum was available for pre-sale on December 21st via Sephora's mobile app and officially launched on December 22nd. It can be purchased on tatcha.com and sephora.com for $88.
